Due to reformations that occurred in the mid-16th century, the monastic community could not survive.
During the following century the buildings suffered destruction by the elements. Fortunately, painter of the Romantic movement, Caspar David Friedrich and Carl Gustav Carus for instance, rediscovered the glories scenery of the ruins in the 18th and 19th century. Thus, the castle became famous again.
Since those days, the castle has been remodeled with tremendous effort. Although it is absolutely worth to save this beautiful ensemble of architecture and nature, it is a challenge against the time.
