History The tradition of procession of monks reaches back to the year 1851 when the Zittau singing group "Liederkranz" performed a musical event referring to the Cölestiner monks who erstwhile lived in the Oybin monastery. The monk’s cloth consisted of a white undergarment, covered by a black gown and fixed by a white rope. They worn a black kerchief over their shoulders, a white cape on the head along with a black hood. On their feed they worn sandals.

The German emperor Karl IV sponsored the building of the Oybin monastery in 1366. The monastery contains a church, which was designed by the famous architect Peter Parler. He became famous for the construction of the Cathedral in Prag, the capital of Czech Republic. The signs in the stones reference to the “Prager Dombauhütte”. The construction period took 18 years, before the Prag archbishop could state the opening. The church was sanctified to the holy spirit, the holy Maria, the holy Wenzel, and the holy Petrus (pope Cölestin V). Because of this the monastery church contains besides the main chapel three additional chapels for instance the Sacristy, sanctified to the holy Wenzel. The church hall is 30 m long and 22 m high. The Cölestiner monks have lived in the monastery until 1547. After the last Oybin monk died in 1568, the monastery was struck by lightening and burned down in 1577. The fire lasted at whole week and destroyed a lot.
