Since over hundred years the steam powered Zittau Mountain railway has been connected Zittau with the villages Oybin and Jonsdorf covering a total distance of 12km. Because of his narrow gauge size of only 750mm the light railway got his name – Schmalspurbahn (narrow gauge railway). Actually the residents also call it “Bimmelbahn” as characterized by the ringing railway bell.
The first railway of this type operated in 1890. Today there is a regular timetable, and the meaning of the railway has grown to a popular tourist attraction.

Staring in Zittau the railway leads passengers towards the Zittau Mountains. After arriving Berzdorf station there are two options to proceed. You can either continue your trip towards Jonsdorf or Oybin. Both trips bring you to center places in the heart of the Zittau Mountains, and both are worth to do. In former times the connection between Zittau Vorstadt and Oybin consisted of a double track, which was unique for the Saxon light railway.
It takes up to 45 min to get from Zittau to one the destinations in the Zittau Mountains. This allows the visitor to enjoy the glories landscape. The passenger may pay attention to one restriction that still applies – Do not pick up flowers during the trip at any time!

We present you the whole life of the Zittau Mountain railway. Get an impression of how the railway was developed and which tools were used by the construction workers. Also you can see tickets, pictures and reports from former times. Old railway lights and two remodeled carriages are also shown at the exhibition.
